It's a lot to look at. Once you're comfortable with "Quickstart," the game's options really open up. You can place yourself in various scenarios: those you set up yourself, or famous and not-so-famous scenarios from the annals of chess history.
Things like "Checkmate in 5 moves" and "Pinning to Win Material" are definite challenges, and without knowing it, you'll probably learn a thing or two about chess strategy. Additionally, there's a scalable Mentor system, which can offer you varying degrees of hints for your next move.
If that weren't enough, a "Blunder Alert" can be turned on to keep you from making a really stupid move. Usually, the game will tell you why it's a bad move as well, explaining that such a move places your King in check, puts you in a Pin, will force lost material pieces , and so on. It's a wonderful learning tool. To make the game more appealing, the graphics are about as interesting as they can get for a chess game.
There are tons of boards to choose from, complete with different piece sets and true 3D rendering with shadows. It's a bit overkill, but the pretty graphics give it a broader appeal.
There are also sets specifically made for kids, where pieces look like various animals and the boards look more like Candyland or Chutes 'N Ladders. It's still a game of chess, but it's a nice way to introduce a younger player to the concepts behind this age-old game.
This is also the only chess game I can remember that has an FMV opening of people playing chess through various time periods.
In the end, it's still chess. You like it or you don't. The opponents are also low levelled, use fun and animated chess sets and players receive certificates for completing sections. Then for the adult players, there is an Academy. This features commentary and annotations that analyse the psychology of chess.
Allowing beginners and intermediate players to develop their skills and knowledge of the game. This also features a section of puzzles and drills much like the fun section too. Then for more experienced players. Asking players to truly master the game in this interesting but criminally short section. The AI opponents in this title are the true shining aspect for the franchise.
The variety of options is staggering considering the very simple premise that the game is built upon. The player can alter difficulty as expected from pure beginner to grand champion. Though players can also read player bios to see what their playstyle is, if speed chess is their preference and so on. Send comment.
Download Chessmaster We may have multiple downloads for few games when different versions are available. Just one click to download at full speed! Windows Version. Patch Patch 1. Follow Us! Top downloads. List of top downloads. Latest releases. Of course more mainline openings go a bit deeper, but those who want to use the program mostly for studying openings or analyzing games will be better off with Fritz , although Fritz does have a slightly more complicated interface.
A major feature still missing is the ability to analyze a game in real time as one scrolls through the moves; one has to analyze the whole game, which precludes moving up and down along possible lines to analyze them, something that Fritz and a few of the other specialized games do extremely well. The learning and training tools in Chessmaster are exceptionally good and more than adequate, although I will admit that there are specialized programs that might be better -but I haven't tried them myself; the Josh Waitzkin Searching for Bobby Fischer tutorials are very well done, with voiceover comments.
There are a few bugs here, such as the comments not exactly following the game, but nothing serious, and even experienced players can learn a lot by following the tutorials and lessons. Combined with the Kids' Room, these features put CM on the top of the heap for learning chess.
One feature I particularly liked was the rating quiz; the computer asks you sets of questions on each aspect of the game like position play, opening tactics, endgames and so on, and you are rated on each facet of the game.
When you are finished, you are given an overall rating that is probably more accurate than ratings calculated by playing against the computer, and it is a lot of fun to try to improve your rating. So you need the additional features like the larger database and the Kids' Room. Some experts use chess programs only to analyze games, and they should abstain also in favor of programs like Fritz or Chessbase, if they have the money for the latter.
Those who should consider buying this game are people who want to buy a chess program for a child, or those who want to update for an earlier version of Chessmaster, or owners of some chess products with fewer features. All in all, Chessmaster , although it is mostly an upgrade of CM , is a worthy successor to its predecessors, and will undoubtedly keep its place as the best-selling chess program. Some bugs have been reported on the chess forums, but I haven't observed any serious bugs myself, and most should be corrected.
